I talked about Barney Could, the Orpheum's Theatre general director, and I said seeing the Big Show of 1936 would be a treat for almost everyone. Since then I've received at least a dozen messages from people In the Petaluma area who have seen this stage show, and here's how some of their messages went: Bill, you were right. The Big Show of 1936 was everything we expected and even more. It was wonderful seeing stars like Jackie Coogan, Sally Pand, Beatrice Kay, Allan Jones, Virginia O'Brien, Vlnce Barnett and the rest of the cast.

Those who called me about the Big Show of 1936 said It was a lot more than a mere trip down memory lane. To those who haven't seen this great show, I have this news. The Big Show of 1936 ends this weekend, so you still have time to see It and it will be a long time before you see such an array of stars on one stage. I'd like to go on record as predicting that Barney Gould, who has many friends In this area, started off on the right foot by opening at the Orpheum with the Big Show of 1936 -and I'll keep everyone, who reads this column, Informed about Bar ney's future productions at this theatre. I'd also like to note that Cathy Furnlss did a great Job of publicizing the Big Show of 1936, and without a good publicist even a great show can turn into a flop.

Suggestion to Barney Could bring back more of those great stars and the Orpheum will become the bright star on the San Francisco entertainment front. In a future column I'll be telling more about Jackie Coogan, Beatrice Kay, Virginia O'Brien and other members of the cast of the Big Show of 1936 and my chatter about them will deal with a party where I met these stars. I'll also be talking about Ken Arnold, a famouns San Francisco photographer, who has photographed many of the world's most famous people. The city had been bombed so severely in the war that no hotel accommodations were available.

In protest against the crammed quarters on board the liner which was anchored just off the city and against the poor food which was being provided for them, they marched off the ship, took quarters in the city and refused to compete unless better amenities were provided. They were promptly suspended by the American Olympic Committee. However, following intervention by other members of the team and the promise that all their complaints would be examined, they returned to the ship and an uneasy peace was restored. This Game marked the debut of Paavo Nurmi (Finland), destined to become one the greatest heroes of modern Olympic history. Although the unsmiling Finn, who always raced with a stop watch in his hand, was 1 beaten in his first Olympic 1 race he was nipped at the tape in the 5,000 meters by Joseph Guillemot (France) he came back to win the 10,000 meters and to lead Finland to victory in the 10,000 -meter cross country event.

Before his Olympic career ended at Amsterdam in 1928, Nurmi had collected nine Olympic gold medals six in individual events and three in team races. This, of -course, is a record of the track and field events of the Olympic Games. Hutch added "I'm the kind of a man who can sit down and watch a woman work, and even encourage her to work harder." Hutch wound up his statements on women's rights thusly: "If a lady likes to work, she should be given that privilege; being a man who's notespeciallyfondofwork, I think a lady who feels the same way should abstain from working."
